Four men, who allegedly robbed a Brazilian national and a taxi driver in an attack at Oleander Gardens, East Coast Demerara, on Friday, have been arrested.
The suspects, who hail from East Ruimveldt, Mocha, East Bank Demerara and Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, respectively, were all apprehended in a house at Circle Front, East Ruimveldt.
They were located after the police reportedly tracked one of the mobile phones that were stolen in the attack.
Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan, in a press release issued yesterday, said that the suspects were positively identified by the victims. He also said one of the suspects has since admitted his involvement in the crime.
A police source told Stabroek News that the Brazilian national hired the taxi in order to visit a relative who resides in Oleander Gardens.
After they arrived at the location and the Brazilian attempted to exit the vehicle, one of the suspects held her up, while another attacked the taxi driver. The bandits relieved them of the valuables they had in their possessions and made good their escape in a car, which was occupied by two accomplices.
It is suspected that the bandits either trailed the victims or they were already at the location waiting to ambush them.
While investigations are still ongoing, the quartet is expected to be charged later this week.
