Dear Editor,
I commend the Ministry of Education on the roll-out of its Smart Classroom at the National Centre for Education and Resource Development in Kingston, Georgetown as reported in the editorial ‘The Smart Classroom’ (SN, November 24). While this is a welcome initiative by the Ministry of Education I wonder if serious consideration has been given to the necessity of Smart Classrooms at this moment in time.
Guyana is basically an agrarian society that is seeking to move into the digital age with the introduction of Smart Classrooms. I understand the need to bridge the digital divide with the developed world but there are stages for Guyana to go through before it reaches the digital age.
The electricity system leaves a lot to be desired. As for automation, this is practically non-existent. Smart Classrooms are a step in the right direction, but they are a step too far in the right direction.
Yours faithfully,
Sean Ori
