District 11’s Rickie Williams and Margaret Augusto of District Nine emerged winners of the male and female Open 10k road race of this years’ 57th National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships which got underway yesterday.
Starting in the village of Mary and ending at the finish line inside the National Track and Field Centre, Williams and Augusto were given rousing applauses as their entry coincided with the opening ceremony.
Williams, 17, who hails from Region 1 but now attends Chase’s Academy on a scholarship, stopped the clock in a brisk 35 minutes and 32 seconds.
He bested fellow podium dwellers, Matthew McKenzie (District 13) and Garvin Stephen of District Nine. McKenzie ran in in 36 minutes and 20 seconds while Stephen crossed the line 29 seconds later.
On the distaff side, Augusto crossed the tape in 42 minutes and 57 seconds. Shema Tyrell (44m: 27s) of District 10 and Lisa Charles (50m: 22s) of District Three snared silver and bronze.
Today, swimming and cycling will be held from 09:00hrs at the Aquatic Centre and the National Park.
