Two men were yesterday remanded to prison by a city magistrate on the charge that they robbed a pastor of $1.8 million.
The charge against Renard Khan and a La Cruz (surname) stated that on November 22nd, at Church Street, using a gun, they robbed Eldon Anderson of $1.8 million.
Both men pleaded not guilty.
Khan, 31, of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, stated that he was placed on an identification parade along with others who were all of African descent and he was not pointed out. La Cruz, a 25-year-old mason of Onderneeming, West Bank Demerara, stated the he too was placed on an identification parade along with persons who were mainly of African descent and was not pointed out.
The prosecutor objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence and the fact that a gun was used.
Magistrate Judy Latchman refused both men bail and remanded them to prison until December 11th.
Police had said that Anderson had left his home with a large quantity of cash in his possession.
He then proceeded to the city bank to make a withdrawal. After completing the transaction, Anderson was proceeding along Church Street, Georgetown, where his vehicle was struck by a silver Spacio. As a result, he stepped out of the vehicle to inspect the damage and he was pounced upon by two armed occupants of the other car. The men relieved him of the parcel containing the money that was in his car and made good their escape.
