The brother of Fazil Haniff, the mason who was shot during a confrontation with a man he accused of having an affair with his wife, is not satisfied with the police investigation into the matter, including the failure to locate the suspect.
Nazim Haniff yesterday told Stabroek News that while his brother remains hospitalised in a stable condition, there has been no progress in the investigation.
He is therefore calling on the police to take the matter more seriously and arrest the suspect so that he can face the consequences of his actions.
Fazil Haniff, 27, of Mon Repos Pasture, East Coast Demerara, was shot once in his stomach during the altercation on the night of November 17. He was taken to the Woodlands Hospital and was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Fazil was removed from the Intensive Care Unit on Sunday.
The suspect managed to flee the scene after the shooting.
The firearm used is said to be unlicensed.
A police official yesterday said that several checks were made for the suspect, who reportedly lives in Albouystown, but these were unsuccessful.
Previous reports had revealed that Fazil was shot during an argument with the suspect.
A police source had informed this newspaper that the husband and wife were at home when the suspect visited and an argument erupted.
During the encounter, Fazil Haniff reportedly armed himself with a knife and the suspect whipped out a firearm and discharged a round in his direction, which struck the husband in his stomach.
Nazim told Stabroek News that the shooting stemmed from a triangular affair. He further said that based on what he understands, the suspect is still in contact with his brother’s wife. The man is suspected to be hiding somewhere in Georgetown.
“Every time we call them [the police], they never know anything and don’t have any update to give us,” a relative said, while calling for justice.
