Dear Editor,
I would like to take this opportunity to commend Stabroek News, Kaieteur News and
Guyana Times on their journalism. While SN, for me, sets the standard for impartiality in reporting the news, KN and GT (which I deem as pro-government and pro-opposition, respectively) have come a long way and are less concerned with promoting the government or the opposition in a positive manner.
As the Fourth Estate, the media needs to hold both the government and the opposition accountable in Guyana. Given that the government, any government, has seemingly immense resources at its disposal, how can the free media compete with this propaganda peddling behemoth, ie the state media (Guyana Chronicle and NCN)?
Clearly, there is a need for a more level playing field. And, as such the Guyana Chronicle and NCN need to be privatised.
We are not going to be here forever; we need to leave better institutions than we inherited from our predecessor.
Yours faithfully,
Sean Ori
