Two-time defending champion Sparta Boss and former titlist Back Circle were put on the brink of elimination in the Guinness СGreatest of the Streets Georgetown zone, losing to Gaza Squad and Rising Stars respectively Tuesday at the National Cultural Centre tarmac.
In front of a another large gathering, Gaza Squad overcame Sparta Boss 4-3 on sudden death penalty kicks after regulation time ended with the teams scoreless.
It was a dogged defensive performance from the Sophia-based unit who nullified the attacking threat of Sparta Boss.
Gaza Squad then responded with aplomb in the penalty shoot-out as they converted each attempt to seal the win.
The loss now places the titlist in a must-win situation against the formidable Channel-9 Warriors in their final group fixture. Similarly, giant-killers Rising Stars embarrassed Back Circle 4-1.
Daniel Ross bagged a ‘Guinness Goal (GG)-(a goal scored in the final three minutes of the match is counted as two) in the 17th minute while Rahiem Augustus and Nikkel Carter netted in the fifth and 14th minute.
Back Circle’s consolation goal came via an own goal in the ninth minute. Due to the defeat, Back Circle must defeat Trap House in the final fixture on Saturday to ensure their passage to the elimination round.
Meanwhile, Leopold Street edged Bad-a-Yard 1-0 through an Orandel Williams fourth minute conversion while Bent Street needled Tucville 1-0 via a Sheldon Profitt strike in the third minute.
Also, Future Stars humbled Alexander Village 3-1. Jamal Cozier, Akeemo Anthony and Jermaine Junior scored in the eighth, 14th and 16th minute respectively. On target in the loss was Shem Porter in the 15th minute.
In other results, Trap House defeated Albouystown-B 2-1 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended with the score 0-0 while Queen Street TigerBay defeated Broad Street 3-1 on penalty kicks following a scoreless normal time play.
In other results, Albouystown-A edged GTI Ballers 2-1 on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 score at the end of regulation time. Trevon Calendar scored for GTI Ballers in the sixth minute while Lennox Cort equalised in the seventh minute.
North East La Penitence needled New Market Street 3-1 on penalty kicks, after normal time ended with the score 1-1. Alwyn Moore handed North East the lead in the seventh minute, before Orlando Ricketts equalised in the 12th minute.
