Defending champion Sparta Boss, Gold is Money, Future Stars and Leopold Street earned their berths to today’s [Thursday] quarterfinal following round of 16 victories on Tuesday in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship.
The Spartans, who headlined the evening’s proceedings in front of another mammoth crowd at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac, were made to work in their matchup against Norton Street eventually prevailing by a 2-0 scoreline.
The silence was deafening during the clash as Norton Street held the titlist scoreless in the first half. However, their resistance was broken in the second period as Gregory Richardson recorded goals in the 24th and 25th minute respectively.
Richardson uncorked a powerful strike from the left side to break the deadlock before putting the game to bed one minutes later, rounding the advancing defender and slotting in the left side to seal his double. Sparta Boss will now oppose Queen Street Tiger Bay at the same venue, after the latter edged Upsetters 2-1 on penalty kicks, following a scoreless normal time interval.
On the other hand, Gold is Money crushed GTI Ballers 5-1. Deon Alfred scored a brace in the fourth and 20th minute while Michael Pedro bagged a ‘Guinness Goal’ (GG)-(a goal scored in the finalthree minutes of the match is counted as two) in the 28th minute. Adding a seventh minute strike was Jamal Pedro. Gold is Money will now oppose Rising Stars, who upset highly touted North Ruimveldt 1-0. Jamal Williams scored in the 22ndminute.
Similarly, Future Stars crushed Kingston 5-0. Jamal Cozier tallied a double in the sixth and 21st minute while Kevin Griffith registered a (GG) in the 27th minute.
An own goal in the 26th minute added to the scoreline. Future Stars will now oppose Bent Street in a titanic clash, after the latter edged North East La Penitence 1-0. Travis Lyken scored in the 26th minute. Also, Leopold Street squeaked past Ol Skool Ballers 1-0 compliments of an Okanie Fraser strike in the 20th minute. They will now match skills with California Square, who downed Trap Squad 1-0. Meshach Barratt found the back of the net in the 20th minute. Meanwhile, the respective losers will compete in the inaugural Guinness Plate Championship, with the resulting winner pocketing $60,000.
Winner of the overall event will walk-away with $500,000 and the championship trophy along with automatic qualification for the National Playoffs.
