A cane harvester was on Wednesday night fatally struck down along the Anna Catherina Public Road, on the West Coast of Demerara, allegedly by a speeding driver.
Police, in a statement, said that a 20-year-old driver of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, is currently in custody assisting with the investigation of the death of Winston Domingo.
Domingo, 34, called ‘Tall Man,’ was a father of one of 59 Water Pump Street, Anna Catherina. He was formerly of Aishalton, South Rupununi.
He was returning home from a shop when the accident occurred.
According to the police, the accident occurred at 11.55 pm. Police said that from a preliminary investigation, it was revealed that a car, PVV 4420, was proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the road, reportedly at a very fast rate, when its front left side collided with the rear of Domingo’s bicycle. As a result of the impact, the cyclist fell onto the car’s windscreen, then onto the road. The impact also caused the bicycle to break into two pieces.
Domingo, police said, was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A breathalyser test was subsequently administered to the driver but no alcohol was found on his breath, police noted.
At Domingo’s home, his grieving widow, Diane Domingo, said that he had left to purchase a soft drink from the shop and was returning home when he was struck down. “I was home with the baby [their three-year old daughter] when people come calling and say come see what happened to you husband. When I reach there, I could have drop down… he was bleeding and was not moving,” the wife said as she fought back tears.
Diane explained that one of her husband’s feet appeared to be broken and he was bleeding from the back of his head.
The widow called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation and expressed her fear that justice would not be served. Questioned why she was fearful, she said, “Last night, from since the accident happen, the driver family was on their phone calling up the big policemen….”
“I want justice to be served because he did not deserve to die like this. He was good to us and he was the only one working. I don’t know how we are going to make out… he died and left us with nothing,” she added, while noting that she will need help to bury her husband.
