Permaul grabs 5 for 40
Guyana Jaguars finished the first day of their sixth-round fixture in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional first-class tournament against the struggling Windwards Islands Volcanoes in a dominant position, after another exceptional bowling performance by left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The Jaguars, after Permaul’s 5 for 40 routed the Volcanoes for 117, were 78 for 2, at stumps, trailing by a mere 39 runs.
Skipper Leon Johnson had earlier won the toss and invited the visitors to take first strike.
The hosts, however, had to wait until the 13th over to get the initial breakthrough, when Sherfane Rutherford dislodged the inform Devon Smith for 16, initiating another Volcanoes batting collapse.
Permaul then collected the wickets of Taryck Gabriel (4), Miles Bascombe (0) and skipper Tyrone Theophile, who top scored with 33, as Volcanoes slipped to 71 – 4.
They were eventually bundled out for 117 in 54.3 overs, after a little resistance from Dennis Smith (20) and Shane Shillingford (12), who added 33 for the ninth wicket, to push the total over the 100 run mark.
Assisting Permaul in the demolition of the Windwards batting lineup were, Gudakesh Motie who claimed 2 for 11, Rutherford (2-27) who continues his upward rise, as the hero of the last match Keemo Paul picked up the other wicket to fall.
Jaguars in their first knock had reached 48 when Chandrapaul Hemraj (29) was bowled by Sherman Lewis, who also removed skipper Johnson (4), late in the afternoon.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul, coming off of three consecutive fifties, was unbeaten on 27, and Vishaul Singh on seven, as stumps were drawn.
Play resumes today at 9: 30hrs.
