BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Shayne Moseley fashioned his maiden first-class hundred to upstage purposeful bowling from Rahkeem Cornwall and prop up Barbados Pride’s batting against Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the Regional 4-Day Championship yesterday.
The lanky left-handed opener gathered a resolute 117 and all-rounder Justin Greaves was unbeaten on 79, as the Pride were bowled out for 394 in their first innings about 15 minutes after tea on the second day of their sixth-round match.
Hurricanes captain Cornwall was the pick of his side’s bowlers, grabbing 5-113 from 51.3 overs with his off-spin, and fast-medium bowler Jeremiah Louis supported with 3-80 from 23 overs on the typically unforgiving Warner Park surface.
The home team suffered a setback, when Chesney Hughes fell to Kevin Stoute for 17 and reached 61 for one in reply when stumps were drawn with Montcin Hodge not out on 27 and Nkrumah Bonner not out on seven.
Moseley, playing his first season in the R4Day, struck 17 fours from 303 balls to be the rock upon which the Pride built their total.
After resuming from his overnight total 70, he added 53 for the third wicket with fellow left-hander Jonathan Carter, as the Pride made a strong start to the day after the continued from 174 for two.
When Cornwall trapped him lbw about 25 minutes before lunch, the Pride were 251 for five, but Greaves came to the crease and led a rearguard action with the bottom half of the batting to extend the Pride innings past tea, taking them to the brink of 400.
Greaves struck nine fours and one six from 141 balls and shared 80 with Antigua & Barbuda-born, former Hurricanes leg-spinner Hayden Walsh, Jr, whose 38 helped to knock the wind out of the hosts before Keon Harding joined him to further frustrate them, putting on 48 for the last wicket.
Pride – entering the match fifth on 48 points – have so far gained two points after reaching 265 for seven at the 110-over threshold and 0.2 pace bowling points from Stoute’s early scalp. Hurricanes – starting fourth in the standings on 49.6 – have so far added two bowling points and 0.8 pace bowling.
