iven by an off-duty police constable attached to the Fort Wellington Police Station on Saturday evening struck a cyclist along the Rosignol Public Road and killed him.
The dead man has since been identified as Damon Barron, 43, a minibus driver of Lot 103 William Street, Rosignol Village, West Coast Berbice.
According to a police press release, the police constable who was off duty at the time was proceeding south along the eastern side of the Rosignol Public Road in motor car PWW 5999 allegedly at a fast rate and collided with the rear of Barron’s bicycle.
According to information gathered, Barron, a father of four fell onto the public road face down. The police constable rendered assistance and rushed him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Barron reportedly succumbed to his injuries sometime around 6.45 am yesterday.
His sister, Angelia Britton, told Stabroek News that her brother had parked the bus he operated at Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice and was heading home on his bicycle when the accident occurred sometime around 7 pm. The woman said her brother sustained mostly head injuries.
She also relayed, that she spoke with the constable who told her and other relatives that he “drop asleep on the wheel…The officer told us he was tired and he drop asleep”, she said.
The police constable who has since been placed under close arrest was said to have been operating his personal vehicle.
According to the release, the police constable was tested and was found to have no alcohol on his breath.
