Deputy Mayor of Georgetown Lionel Jaikaran was recently reelected president of the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) following the staging of its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election of office bearers.
According to a press release, the voter turnout, in triple figures, was the largest in recent years and Mr. Jaikaran won by a significant majority over his challenger Mr. Graeme Ali.”
In remarks following his reelection, Jaikaran said his team was strong united and prepared to advance the interests of the club and consolidate on the gains and successes achieved so far.
Those elected to serve on the new executive are: Ramsey Ali, vice president, Sadie Amin, secretary, Timothy Tucker, treasurer, Jameel Baksh, club captain, Philip Fernandes, Satanand Gopie and Tiffany Solomon, committee members.
Earlier Jaikaran reported that the installation of floodlights around the ground will be completed by the end of the year which, he said, will allow the club to be used for extensive hours come next year.
“Next year will also see the club maximizing vacant areas on the premises to expand the list of sport and recreational activities available to include table tennis, a revival of lawn tennis and squash,” the release stated.
Jaikarran, also spoke of the challenges faced by the club since 2006, to generate revenue and to keep the club and cricket at the club alive and vibrant following the loss of international cricket at the venue, which is the oldest cricket club in the region.
