The inaugural Guyana Football Federation (GFF) ‘Super 16 Year-end Classic’ will officially kickoff today at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Linden with a doubleheader.
In the opening fixture at 18:30hrs, Winners Connection oppose Camptown FC at 18:30hrs, while Milerock battle Cougars from 21:00hrs.
On Sunday, at the Den Amstel ground, Pouderoyen will oppose Guyana Defence Force (GDF) from 13:00hrs, while Den Amstel engage the Indigenous All-Stars at 15:30hrs.
The event continues on Wednesday 20th at the Tucville ground. At 18:30hrs, Western Tigers oppose Grove Hi-Tech, while Fruta Conquerors will tackle Ann’s Grove at 20:30hrs.
The final matches in the round of 16 stage commence on Friday 22nd at the Buxton Community ground. Victoria Kings will oppose the Guyana Police Force at 18:00hrs, while Buxton United will lock horns with New Amsterdam United from 21:00hrs.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the event will feature guest players. According to GFF Director of Competitions Ian Alves, “It is only for the invited clubs, not the Elite Clubs and the Indigenous All-Stars, because the Elite Clubs are expected at their level that they should be at a good place.”
He added, “The main thing is that we wanted not leave out good national players from being out of the tournament. We can’t take all the clubs and they have some good players left out and we had to find a way to involve them. We allowed two guest players from the non-elite teams. It has nothing to do with the Elite League clubs.” Alves was unable to state who was responsible for incorporating this ruling.
The event which is being sponsored by Top Brandz Distributors under the Corona Beer Brand, will feature 16 teams competing in a knockout format.
January 1st is slated for the championship match at the National Stadium, Providence. Winner of the event will pocket $2,000,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up will collect $1,000,000 and the respective accolade.
