Defending champion Silver Shattas crushed Topp XX by a 3-1 scoreline, when the 5th Annual Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA)/GT Beer Football Champion-ship continued on Wednesday.
Staged at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Linden, the holders broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, as Damion Williams found the back of the net.
Williams directed his powerful unchallenged header past the opposing custodian, after latching onto a perfectly placed Michael Wilson cross from a free-kick 28 yards from goal, inside the penalty area.
Following the commencement of the second period, Jermaine Samuels doubled the lead in the 51st minute.
It was a simple finish from the clinical forward, as he slotted home unchallenged inside the box, after an initial strike from a team-mate was parried by the goalkeeper into his onrushing path.
The home side eventually pulled one back in the 64th minute, with emerging talent Tyric McAllister making his presence felt.
The diminutive McAllister unleashed a powerful header into the roof of the goal, after rising high inside the penalty area, to make contact with a cross.
Nevertheless, Silver Shattas put the game to bed, as Robin Adams etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 75th minute, slotting his effort past the opposing shot-stopper, after collecting a pass inside the six yard area.
Meanwhile, Blueberry Hill upset Amelia’s Ward Panthers 1-0. Kwesi Tafawa settled the contest following a scoreless first half, with a moment of brilliance in the 73rd minute.
Receiving the ball on the right side of the 18 yard box, Tafawa dribbled past two defenders, before uncorking a powerful effort past goalkeeper Omalli Castillo into the left corner, stunning the large crowd.
The participating teams are defending champion Silver Shattas, three time former champions Winners Connection, Topp XX, Netrockers, Kwakwani, Amelia’s Ward, Botofago, Blueberry Hill, Eagles and Hi-Stars.
The event will resume at the same venue with another doubleheader on Sunday. The remaining fixtures are slated for December 22, 27, with the grand final slated for New Year’s Day.
