Wicketkeeper batsman Anthony Bramble narrowly missed out on converting his maiden first-class century into a double whilst propelling the Guyana Jaguars to 417 all out on day two in their day/night encounter against the Leeward Island Hurricanes at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Jaguars after piling up their mammoth first innings score, also found reward with the ball as Veerasammy Permaul spun webs around the visitors, to leave the Hurricanes on stuttering at 114 -9, still trailing by 303 runs at the close.
Jaguars resumed the day on 276 – 8, with Bramble on 116, and his overnight partner, Permaul on one. The duo added another 31 runs before Permaul (11), was trapped LBW by seamer Mervin Mathew.
Bramble, nonetheless found a reliable ally in Gudakesh Motie and kept on hitting the fence, bringing up his 150 by smashing off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall for a maximum.
Motie, also joined in the fun and eased a couple of boundaries of his own to post 47, before he was stumped, leaving Bramble stranded on 196, after they had added 110 for the final wicket, to push the score beyond the 400-run mark.
Bramble during his heroic knock, hammered 23 fours and five sixes, during one of the better innings this year’s regional tournament.
The Jaguars then took the momentum into the bowling department, to leave Hurricanes stuttering on 114 for 9 at the pulling of stumps.
Seamer Romario Shepherd got things rolling for the hosts by uprooting the stumps of Montcin Hodge (9), with the score on 24, while Keemo Paul ended Chesney Hughes’ faith in similar fashion, two runs later. Shepherd struck again to remove Devon Thomas (20), after he had added 25 runs with Shane Burton, to take the Hurricanes over the 50-run mark.
Things got even worse for the visitors when Permaul had a triple strike by removing Akeem Saunders (18), Jahmar Hamilton (0) and Burton (20), sending the visitors into further disarray, with the score on 90 – 6.
The left arm spinner then struck trice again later in the evening when he removed Cornwall (13), Terrence Ward (8) and Tonge (2), to grab his sixth scalp of the innings, as Hurricanes ended the evening, reeling on a – 9.
Permaul for his exploits, has so far taken 6 – 21, while Shepherd (2-26), and Paul (1-35), claimed the other wickets to fall. (Royston Alkins)
