A cash crop vendor is now in hospital after he was shot by bandits during an early morning invasion of his Friendship, East Bank Demerara home.
At about 6.45 am yesterday, police said that Jaimayjai Singh called Ramchan, 65 years, of Lot 9 Friendship EBD, was in the bottom flat of his home when three bandits entered and demanded cash and jewellery. Police said all three of the unmasked men were armed with guns.
At the time of the robbery, Singh who resides alone had the door of the bottom flat of his home opened which allowed the bandits to enter easily. As they pounced on the pensioner, he refused to comply resulting in the bandits beating him with their guns. It was at this point Singh decided to comply and gave in to the demands of his attackers. Police said a sum of $200,000 was handed over to the men but they were not satisfied with the amount. This led to a bandit shooting him in his right leg.
After shooting the pensioner, the bandits fled. The man was rescued by his neighbours who rushed him to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he received medical attention before he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He is currently in a stable condition.
Police upon investigating recovered a .32 spent shell. No arrest has been made and investigations are ongoing.
