Elections for a new Guyana Press Association (GPA) executive have been pushed back until early next year after there was no quorum yesterday.
Those present unanimously decided that the new date for the elections will be January 7, 2018 at which time media workers from outlying areas are due to be in Georgetown.
At the meeting held at the CARIFESTA Sports Complex yesterday, only a handful of practising full-time media workers responded to a notice published in the daily newspapers.
Most of those attending yesterday’s meeting came from the state-owned Guyana Chronicle and the others from privately-owned media.
While the high staff turnover, occasioned by migration and short-lived tenures in the local media have taken their toll, the GPA executive hopes that come next month the turnout and participation in the elections will be bigger.
Outgoing GPA President, Neil Marks was unavoidably absent from yesterday’s meeting but in his report, he credited the executive with successes in the areas of training, advocacy and the holding of what is expected to be an annual media awards.
