Gold is Money ascended to the throne of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship, dethroning defending champion Sparta Boss 1-0 in a dream finale on Saturday at the Demerara Park Tarmac.
It was a fitting end to a captivating tournament, as the first ever meeting between the teams in the Georgetown Zone, delivered a spectacle, which was witnessed by a capacity crowd.
Randolph Wagner, denied the Spartans from securing an unprecedented hat-trick of titles, sending the crowd into raptures with a 26th minute conversion.
It was his fourth conversion in the tournament and his most important, as Wagner directed his effort into the back of the net from the left side, following a right side pass from Phillip Rowley, during a two on one situation.
The goal was initiated after Rowley intercepted an initial pass, springing ahead down the right side, before directing a perfect pass to the onrushing Wagner, who made no mistake.
With the win, Gold is Money walked away with $500,000, the winning trophy and an automatic berth in the national playoffs, while Sparta Boss received $250,000 and a trophy.
In the earlier third place playoff, Leopold Street crushed Bent Street 3-0. Orandel Williams scored in the ninth minute, while Tyrese Forde recorded a Guinness Goal-[goal scored in the final three minutes is counted as two] in the 27th minute.
With the result, Leopold Street walked away with $200,000 and the third place trophy, while the loser pocketed $100,000 and the corresponding accolade.
In the Plate Section, North East La Penitence defeated Kingston 1-0 to walk-away with $60,000. Kelvin Moore found the back of the net in the 26th minute.
Meanwhile, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste following the conclusion of the event, said he was heartened by the support throughout the tournament from the fans and communities and promised that the event is here to stay.
He also commended the work done by the Guyana Police Force throughout the tournament, adding that their excellent job did not go unrecognized.
The tournament was coordinated by Three Peat Promotions. Attention now turns to the West Demerara section which is expected to commence in January at the Pouderoyen Market Tarmac.
