A new coach could be at the helm of the Golden Jaguars senior programme in 2018, as the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is scheduled to advertise for the coveted position.
According to GFF Boss Wayne Forde during a media briefing at the entity’s Section `K’ Campbellville location, “We will advertise for a head coach and everyone will be eligible to apply including Mr. [Wayne] Dover and that will be done very early next year”.
Following the exit in 2016 of Trinidad and Tobago native Jamaal Shabazz, who was in his third stint, after the embarrassing 4-2 loss to Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifiers on local soil, Dover was appointed on an interim basis.
However, the former Alpha United tactician has a disappointing record. In the four games at the helm of the programme, Dover is yet to taste victory, earning two draws and as many defeats.
The first assignment during his tenure resulted in a scoreless draw with Martinique at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground Linden, on March 29th 2017.
His second match saw a 1-0 loss to host Grenada on October 8th, while a respectable 1-1 draw with home side Trinidad and Tobago occurred on November 16th.
In his final match for the year, the Golden Jaguars lost 2-1 to host nation Indonesia on November 25th.
The GFF Chief further said, “What is important is that you have a national team coach and technical director that forms a working synergy. The TD [Technical Director] prepares the nation’s programme, the head coach prepares the nation’s team but unless there is a synergy between those two key positions then you generally will have a disjointed approach.”
Forde added, “We do not view the national team set up from an individual frame, we look at what is necessary for the progression of team and the advancement of the executive committee’s vision on how they want to see the national team develop.”
He further disclosed that the position will be filled shortly, due to the impending commencement of the CONCACAF League of Nations.
The League of Nations Championship features all 41 CONCACAF nations and is geared to replace most international friendlies in the Confederation.
Teams will be divided into three categories based on ranking and quality, with victories resulting in points in a relegation and promotion structure.
The competition will also serve as the direct qualifier for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and form the basis for future FIFA World Cup Qualifier seeding.
