Some heavy hitters headlined by the medal winning quartet at the recently concluded Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament in St Lucia are scheduled to showcase their talent on the Boxing Day ‘Sons of Champions’ card.
According to President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle, 11 bouts are planned for the fixture to be staged at the National Gymnasium from 7 pm.
It will be the first time in almost a decade that a boxing event will be held on ‘Boxing Day’.
Ninvalle told this newspaper yesterday that two of the fights will be ‘grudge matches’ involving two of the three gold medalists who returned from St Lucia on Monday.
Keevin Allicock will go toe-to-toe in a rematch with former national bantamweight champion, Clairmont Gibson who he dethroned at the Terrence Ali National Open last month at the same venue.
Allicock who snared a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the flyweight division earlier this year, will be looking to step up once again against Gibson and record another victory. The former champion, Gibson will be hoping for a role reversal against the talented teen from Albouystown.
In the other grudge match, middleweight gold medalist in St Lucia, ‘Dynamite’ Desmond Amsterdam will lace it up against arch rival, former national middleweight champ Dennis ‘The Menace’ Thomas. Thomas is the current national light heavyweight champion. Fireworks are anticipated.
Tuesday’s card which is a collaborative effort involving the GBA and Seon Bristol of Briso Promotions, will also see Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis and Joel Williamson entering the ring.
Lewis boxed his way to a gold medal in St Lucia in the light welterweight division while Williamson snared the silver in the lightweight class.
Admission is $1000 for stands, $1500 for ringside and $2500 for VIP.
