If you are a fan of the fistic sport, then definitely the place to be is the National Gymnasium on Boxing Day.
And if the verbal jabs thrown following the final press conference yesterday at the WindJammer Hotel is any indication of things to come, then boxing fans are in for a Christmas treat.
“It’s going to be a World War” said bantamweight Clairmonte Gibson who is set to match gloves on the ‘Sons of Champions’ card with exciting young prospect, Keevin Allicock. Gibson lost a points decision to the Commonwealth Youth Silver medalist last month at the National Open and is out for revenge.
Allicock who recently boxed his way to a gold medal at the Caribbean Develop-ment Boxing Tournament in St Lucia was cool as a cucumber in his rebuttal. “I am prepared and well-focused and ready for anything that comes and I want to give the audience something they will want to come again and see”, said the 18 year-old standout.
Meanwhile, GBA Technical Director Terrence Poole revealed that the highly anticipated middleweight bout between Desmond Amsterdam and Policeman Dennis Thomas will not occur given that the latter opted not to fight.
The battle had many pundits undecided as to a winner since both have held victory over each other. However, Amsterdam will still take the ring but against Alloco Best.
Poole then urged fans to come out in their numbers in support of the event since a high calibre card is expected. He also stated that the event gives the boxers a golden opportunity to be involved in intense competition ahead of what is anticipated to be a busy 2018.
Nine other fights are also carded, including two female bouts. Alicia Rodney, from the newly inaugurated Savannah Boxing Gym (SBG) clash with Abiola Jackman (FYF). Aleema Arokium (RHJ) takes on Army representative Joan Williams in a female elite flyweight battle.
Gates will open at 18:00 hrs and organisers further emphasized the first gloves will touch at 19:00 hrs.
Admission is $1000 for stands, $1500 for ringside and $2500 for VIP.
