A fisherman was yesterday remanded to prison over the murder of his neighbour when he appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
Suresh Persaud, also known as `Salt fish’, 24, of Friendship Village, Corentyne appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh where he was read the charge of murder.
The charge read that the accused between Saturday December, 23 and Sunday December, 24 at Friendship Village, Corentyne murdered Anand Sookram also known as `Half way’ or `Radesh’.
Persaud who was unrepresented was not required to plead to the charge. He was remanded to prison and will return to the Whim Magistrate’s Court on January, 8.
Sookram, 47, a labourer of 50 Friendship Village, Corentyne, Berbice was found lying in a pool of blood on Sunday morning. Police said he was discovered sometime around 7.30 on his bed with a slit in his throat. A relative of the dead man had told Stabroek News that the discovery was made when one of Sookram’s sons went to the house where he resided alone. “The son went to drop some money for he fuh the holiday but after the boy call and he didn’t answer he went in the house and see he lying in blood on the bed,” the man stated.
According to residents of the area, screams were heard coming from Persaud’s home on Saturday evening. One woman noted, “I heard he hollering for (Persaud) mother name”.
Sookram was a single father of six children.
