A West Coast Berbice man is now dead after being struck by a minibus while trying to cross the Bath Settlement Public Road on Sunday evening.
Laikram Singh, 39, a labourer at the Blairmont Estate and a watchman of 175 Block D Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, had just left home for work when the accident occurred around 6.30 pm.
The driver of the bus that struck him, who has since passed a breathalyser test, remains in custody as the police investigation of the accident is ongoing.
According to information gathered, minibus BVV 2961, driven by a 25-year-old resident of Belladrum Village, West Coast Berbice, was proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the Bath Settlement Public Road, reportedly at a very fast speed. Singh is alleged to have suddenly attempted to cross the road at the Water Street junction and ended up in the path of the bus as a result.
After he was struck, Singh was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Singh’s niece, Sherry Brijlall, 25, told Stabroek News yesterday that her uncle was on his way to work when the accident occurred. “He does watchman right in the village here night time and there he was going,” she said.
According to Brijlall, the death of her uncle is a blow to her family. She noted that Singh would have celebrated his 40th birthday yesterday.
Singh is survived by his common-law wife, a daughter, his mother and other relatives. His body is presently being stored at the Fort Wellington Public Hospital ahead of a scheduled post-mortem examination today.
