-after overpowering Edinburgh Gunners
Beacons tackles Georgetown Police in the GT Beer Berbice 8-aside Football Championship match today from 21:00hrs at the Scott’s School ground, New Amsterdam (NA), following a 7-2 semi-final win over Edinburgh Gunners on Wednesday.
It was a thoroughly lopsided contest, as Beacons, despite conceding the first goal in the clash, romped to the final and set up a tantalizing clash with the lawmen.
Gunners briefly threatened in the clash, with Joseph Giddings etching his name on the scorer’s sheet in the fifth minute in front of a sizable crowd.
However, the sheer quality of the Beacons play overwhelmed the Gunners’ defence, as three unanswered goals were recorded, before the conclusion of the first period.
Eventual hat-trick scorer Travis Lyken, levelled proceedings with a 14th minute strike, before fellow hat-trick hero Deon Alfred converted in the 22nd minute.
The 3-1 first half scoreline was then completed in the 30th minute, as Lyken completed his brace.
The second half mirrored the first period, as Edinburgh scored first in the form of Sherlock Phillips in the 35th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
However, similar to the first half, Beacons tallied unanswered goals. On this occasion it was four goals recorded by Beacons, as Deon Alfred fashioned his second with a powerful strike in the 42nd minute.
Lyken then made it 5-2 compliments of a well-placed strike into the right side of the net to complete his hat-trick. Not to be outdone, Alfred grabbed his third in the 60th minute, slotting his effort into the back of the net.
The scoreline was completed in the 60th+3 minute, as Kimba Brathwaite etched his name on the scorer’s sheet.
Meanwhile, their opponent, the lawmen edged Monedderlust 1-0 on penalty kicks in the earlier semi-final matchup on January 1st, at the same venue. The score at the end of regulation time was 2-2.
Also, Edinburgh Gunners and Moned-derlust will now lock horns in the traditional third place playoff from 19:00hrs.
Winner of the event will receive $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the runner-up will pocket $300,000 and the corresponding accolade.
On the other hand, the third place finisher will receive $100,000 and a trophy.
On the individual side, the Highest Goal Scorer and the Best Goalkeeper will pocket $50,000 each. The tournament is also sponsored by Fly Jamaica.
