A Better Hope taxi driver was yesterday remanded to prison on charges that he had possession of a firearm and matching ammunition.
The charge against Marvin Douglas states that on January 2nd, at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, he had a 9mm pistol in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence.
He was read another charge which alleged that on the same date he had seven live 9mm rounds and one spent shell in his possession.
The 32-year-old Douglas pleaded not guilty to both charges when they were read in a city court.
The prosecution’s case is that on the said date, the police acted on information received and went to the defendant’s home to conduct a search. During the search, the firearm and ammunition were allegedly found. Douglas was told of the offence and gave an oral statement admitting to being the owner of the firearm, police allege.
Douglas’ attorney stated that the police searched his home and an officer had written in her diary that nothing illegal was found, to which Douglas had signed. The attorney further stated that the home is not only occupied by Douglas and his common-law wife but also others.
However, Magistrate Judy Latchman refused bail and remanded Douglas to prison until January 9th.
