A police constable was robbed of a gold chain on Wednesday night at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara but a prompt response from ranks from the Sparendaam Police Station has led to the arrest of a suspect.
Police, in a statement, said two bandits violently attacked the policeman, who is based in the interior, as he was speaking with a relative. The lawman was robbed of his gold chain, which is valued at $220,000.
According to the police, the suspects, who were on a motorcycle, rode up to the lawman and his relative. The pillion rider reportedly whipped out a handgun, dismounted the motorcycle and gun-butted the policeman to his head and relieved him of his chain. The gunman then quickly rejoined his accomplice on the bike and fled the scene.
The victim immediately reported the matter and one of the suspects was arrested in the community. Though the man was positively identified by the lawman, he denied committing the crime.
The chain was not recovered.
The suspect’s alleged accomplice and the motorcycle are being sought.
