Ranks of the Joint Services on Tuesday conducted a five-hour search in the Mazaruni Prison during which prohibited items were unearthed.
The Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force yesterday afternoon confirmed the raid which was conducted between 6 am and 11 am on Tuesday.
Among the items discovered were two SIM cards, six packs of cards, two scissors, fourteen metal spoons, four improvised weapons, three loose cigarettes, sixty used razor blades, fourteen lighters, three bottles of fermented wine, ten nails, two ear pieces and three phone chargers.
Discovery of illegal items has been rife in the prisons, pointing in the direction of lax security or collusion by the prison officers with inmates.
