The year 2018 has started badly for the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) as its Marketing Director, Dario McKinnon, has reportedly tendered his resignation.
“He tendered his resignation on Tuesday basically because of the financial situation of the GFF,” a source close to the GFF stated yesterday. Efforts to contact McKinnon for a comment proved futile.
“How can the GFF state they have sponsorship from FIFA for the next three years and don’t have any monies. The current situation impacted McKinnon’s decision. It’s probably the worst financial state the GFF has been in for a long time,” the source added.
“If it doesn’t change in a few weeks, it is going to be really bad especially since they have not paid the clubs their prize monies yet and owe so much monies to companies and individuals. That has been the case for many years,” the source continued.
The GFF’s economic situation continues to take centre stage. Presently the federation, despite concluding two knockout tournaments over the period of two months, has not paid the prize monies to the respective top four finishers. The federation concluded the ‘Big Four’ Championship on November 12th 2017 and the Year-end Championship on January 1st 2018.
“The clubs have written the federation and they have not gotten a response. It’s a depressing situation for the clubs who need the finances for their players and to help run their affairs. Some clubs are also owed ground rentals and there is also the issue of transportation expenses.”
“There is still the insurance matter from the second season and the players are also owed their match-day stipends for the first two matches in Elite League Season Three,” the source said.
Tucville giant Fruta Conquerors, winner of the ‘Big Four Champion-ship’, is owed $1,500,000. On the other hand, the runner-up Guyana Defence Force (GDF), is owed $700,000.
Similarly, Buxton United and Victoria Kings are owed $500,000 and $300,000 apiece for finishing in the third and fourth positions respectively.
With regards to the Year-end Championship, GDF is owed $2,000,000 for securing the title, while $1,000,000 is outstanding for East Bank of Demerara unit Grove Hi-Tech.
Meanwhile, Fruta Conquerors and Linden outfit Milerock are due $500,000 and $250,000 apiece for ending in the third and fourth position respectively.
