An 18-year-old woman succumbed on Thursday evening, one day after she was allegedly beaten by her common-law husband during an argument at Baramita, in Region One (Barima-Waini).
Dead is Lorinda Thomas, a mother of one of Barama Line, Baramita, North West District.
The fatal beating reportedly occurred around 7.30pm on Wednesday while Thomas was making her way home. She succumbed around 9.30pm on Thursday while receiving medical attention at the Baramita Health Centre.
The suspect fled and was yet to be apprehended up to yesterday.
Stabroek News was told that Thomas left her home on Wednesday afternoon to visit her family.
Upon returning home later in the evening, she was reportedly approached by the suspect and an argument ensued. The man allegedly dealt Thomas several kicks to her abdomen. As a result, Thomas passed out. She later regained consciousness and found herself lying in the grass. She managed to get up and make her way home.
However, when she woke up the following morning, she experienced intense pain in her abdomen. As a result, she went to the community health centre, where she was admitted and kept under observation due to her low blood pressure.
Thomas succumbed to her injuries while being prepared to be air dashed to the city.
An investigation has been launched by the police.
