The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is seeking the support of Minister Responsible for Sports for the establishment of a national primary and secondary schools football league.
According to a release from the GFF, its president Wayne Forde, in presenting the federation’s 2018 Calendar of Activities and Developmental Plan to Minister of Social Cohesion Dr. George Norton, made a pitch for the minister’s support in bringing together the relevant governmental agencies and stakeholders to facilitate the launching of the inaugural GFF/FIFA/GOG National Primary and Secondary School Football League.
The project, which is expected to be funded by FIFA to the amount of US$250,000, is being touted as a landmark initiative for national youth development.
Outlining the key aspects of the programme were GFF Technical Director Ian Greenwood and School’s Development Officer, Seon Bristol.
“Additionally, Forde, in his presentation, shared the GFF’s strategic five-year plan and outlined the federation’s desire to partner with the Government of Guyana (GoG). A key feature of this partnership was government’s support for the GFF Elite League through the provision of employment opportunities for players,” the GFF stated in its release.
“This will contribute to the greater development of the players by providing them with a livelihood through skill acquisition and increased earning capacity, which will ultimately be beneficial for the country,” the GFF stated in its release.
Also discussed was the possibility of a partnership between the federation and the government on the development of community parks and school grounds.
Meanwhile, Minster Norton at the conclusion of the meeting, was presented with the GFF’s Annual Report and Audited Financial Statement.
In attendance were GFF First Vice President Brigadier (ret.) Bruce Lovell, Executive Committee Members Dion Inniss and Keith O’Jeer, General Secretary Acting Rennella Bourne and Communications and Public Relations Officer, Debra Francis.
Melissa Dow-Richardson, Assistant Director of Sport (Policy), Brian Smith –Assistant Director of Sport (Administration) and Natasha Singh-Lewis, Technical Officer were the representatives of the Ministry of Sport.
