The fifth GUMDAC’s annual Open badminton tournament came ended Saturday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue with Ronald Chang Yuen teaming up with Johnathan Mangra to win the male Open doubles before joining forces with Priyanna Ramdhani to win the mixed doubles title.
The female category had concluded the previous day with Ramdhani and Shivanie Persaud taking the women’s doubles first prize.
However, Ramdhani was not finished and returned with Chang Yuen to defeat Akili Haynes and Jayde DaSilva: 21-14, 21-10 in the mixed doubles semi-final while Shivanie Persaud and Marlon Chung made light work of GUMDAC Managing Director, Darrell Carpenay and Ayanna Wickham-Watson: 21-14, 21-1 to book the final showdown in the mixed doubles category.
In the mixed doubles final, Ramdhani and Chang Yuen won a close first set before cruising in the second to win the matchup against Chung and Persaud in straight sets: 21-19, 21-16.
Third place went to Carpenay and Wickham-Watson who defeated Haynes and DaSilva: 22-20, 21-9
Meanwhile the male division resumed at the semifinal stage with Mangra and Chang Yuen dismantling William Holder and Haymant Ramdhani 21-13 and 21-9 to booking their finals berth against Chung and Carpenay who had advanced the previous night.
In the final, Mangra and Chang Yuen defeated the seasoned senior players Chung and Carpenay in a thrilling three-setter.
Mangra and Chang Yuen took the first game 21-14 with Chung and Carpenay winning the second game 12-21 but in the third the youngsters took the third game at 21-19 to win the match.
Third place went to Holder and Ramdhani who gained a walkover from Javid Rahaman and Ernesto Choo-A-Fat.
