A 46-year-old porter lost his life and another man was injured after they were stuck down on Tuesday evening by a motorcar along the Kuru Kururu Public Road while examining their truck.
Dexter Conway, a father of five who resided at Old Road Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital at Diamond where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the truck, Elroy Savory, 30 of Lot 128 Kuru Kururu Village, Soesdyke/Linden Highway was also injured. He was taken to the said hospital where he was treated and sent away.
At the time of the accident which occurred around 11 pm on Tuesday, Savory was the driver of motor lorry GVV 427 with trailer TVV 87 and Conway was the porter.
The police in a statement said investigations revealed that the lorry was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the public road when it encountered a mechanical problem.
As a result, the police said “Savory and Conway exited and were positioned along the right side of the vehicle trying to fix the problem when they were struck down by the motor car PRR 378 which was proceeding in the said direction”.
The driver of the car who has been identified as Sadath Newark, 28, of Lot 81 Kuru Kururu Village, Soesdyke/Linden Highway alleged that he was blinded by the lights on a vehicle proceeding in the opposite direction.
Newark is in custody assisting with the investigation. He was tested and no alcohol was detected on his breath, the police said.
Newark drove the injured men to the hospital.
Lana Conway, wife of the dead man said he worked on trucks that transport wood from Georgetown to the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. She said he would return home every three days.
Lana said she last saw Dexter alive when he left home for work about two hours prior to his death.
The grieving woman related that she was in bed when she heard someone calling for a long period outside her home on Tuesday evening “I heard somebody was calling a long time out here but I didn’t know who was the person and the voice didn’t sound familiar”, she said.
Lana noted that she didn’t respond until the person also started to call out for her eldest son and she sensed something was wrong. “I heard the person call fuh meh big son Revan and then I get out and jump up cause I seh this gah be something happen”, she said.
She said she went to the door, she was greeted by her husband’s employer’s wife who told her that Dexter had died.
