The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) yesterday donated video conferencing equipment to the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) National Accreditation Council (NAC)
A release yesterday from the Ministry of Education said that the equipment will aid the body in the execution of its mandate.
The US$2,000 equipment was handed over by UNESCO Secretary-General to Guyana, Patrice La Fleur to Minister of Education Nicolette Henry at the Barima Avenue office of the NAC.
In her remarks at the handing over ceremony the release reported Henry as saying that the equipment will ensure greater impact at a lower cost while concomitantly improving the efficiency of the NAC.
Henry expressed her Ministry’s gratitude for the donation and assured that the MOE will always look to new methods in the delivery of education services in Guyana.
Executive Director of the NAC, Debra Jack in her remarks said that the donation is
timely since the equipment will be used for training and will lessen expenses for travelling abroad for training.
Jack, according to the release, said that if NAC officers are unable to attend training sessions abroad, the equipment will ensure that they receive that training while in Guyana. “We have to keep learning and keep ourselves abreast with what are the international standards”. Additionally, Jack said that the NAC must be able to establish a service that can effectively measure quality assurance at the tertiary and post-tertiary levels.
Over the last two years, the release said that there has been a concerted effort by the Government of Guyana (GoG) to strengthen the NAC to improve its functioning to quality assurance for all post-secondary and tertiary educational institutions in Guyana using internationally recognized best practices and standards.
The release said that the NAC is now poised to benefit from continuous technical support from the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago.
