Shimron Hetmyer continued a proud Berbice tradition when he scored a pugnacious century against the United States of America (USA) in the 2018 Cricket West Indies Regional One Day Tournament at the Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium in Antigua.
Hetmyer joined fellow Berbice left handers the late Roy Fredericks, Clayton Lambert, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Narsingh Deonarine and Assad Fudadin, who all had the honour of reaching three figures at the Regional One Day Level.
Fredericks was the first to achieve the feat when he hammered the Leeward Islands for a pugnacious 119 at the Antigua Recreation Ground in April 1980.
Strange enough, that innings led Guyana to its first Regional One Day title.
Clayton Lambert was the next Berbice left hander to score a Regional limited overs century. His 111 not out at Hampton Court, Essequibo in 1989, silenced the Leeward Islands.
Lambert’s second century at the Regional One-Day level came against Barbados at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Bourda in 1997. His innings of 151 is still the highest by a Guyanese at that level.
Sewanarine Chattergoon continued the left handed trend with a magnificent 102 not out vs Antigua & Barbuda at Bourda in 2001.
Fans are still talking about Chattergoon’s second Regional One-Day century 119 vs Barbados at Bourda in 2005. That innings led Guyana to its last Regional One-Day title.
Narsingh Deonarine added his name to the Berbice left handers list with an unforgettable 102 not out vs Barbados at the Albion Community Development Centre ground in 2009 while Assad Fudadin emulated Deonarine’s feat with an unbeaten 103 not out against the Combined Colleges and Campuses in 2015 at Warner Park, St. Kitts.
