It was an evening of upsets on Monday, as Future Stars and Back Circle were sent packing, while Sparta Boss and Gold is Money survived stern challenges in the inaugural Magnum Mash Futsal Championship.
The tournament contenders were given the proverbial boot at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, in front of a large crowd. Overall it was a poor night for Georgetown teams, who lost all but one of their matches against the ‘Out-of-Towners.’
Back Circle fell first, as the West Demerara outfit Showstoppers prevailed via a 5-3 score line. Trayon Bobb recorded a helmet-trick in the fourth, seventh, 16th and 22nd minute, while Stephon Jupiter netted in the 23rd minute.
For Back Circle, Jermaine Beckles scored in the 11th and 18th minute, whilst Stephon McLean found the back of the net in the 24th minute. Alexander Village was the next team to be eliminated, as Linden side Swag Entertainment swept them aside 5-3.
Colwyn Drakes registered a hat-trick in the 11th, 13th and 14th minute. Supporting with goals in the ninth and 12th minute apiece were Deshawn Joseph and Romel Matthews. For Alexander Village, veteran Leon Yaw tallied a brace in the fourth and 20th minute, while Alimad Stephens added a conversion in the 15th minute.
The biggest upset of the night came in the third game, as Linden’s Silver Bullets nipped Future Stars 2-1.
Jermaine Samuels and Deshawn Freeman scored in the eighth and 19th minute for Bullets, with Jamal Cozier on in target in the 10th minute for the loser. However, Ol Skool Ballers restored some pride to the home town teams, edging NK Ballers of Linden 2-1, as Lennox Cort and Quason McAulay netted in the 15th and 20th minute apiece. For NK Ballers, Kenard Simon scored in the 22nd minute.
Sparta Boss overcame Ansa McAl All-Stars 3-1. Eusi Phillips scored twice in the second and 15th minute, while Quincy Adams etched his name on the scorer’s sheet with a 22nd effort. Delroy Dean netted in the third minute for All-Stars.
Gold is Money squeaked past North East La Penitence 3-2 in extra time. Colin Nelson recorded a double in the 28th and 29th minute, with Jamal Pedro tallying a second minute attempt. On the other side, Keifer Brandt scored in the 17th and 23rd minute.
In other results, Bent Street crushed Team Extreme 4-0. Job Caesar, Sheldon Profit, Andrew Murray Jr and Travis Lyken, netted in the ninth, 17th, 20th and 23rd minute, respectively.
Leopold Street punched their ticket to the next round, brushing aside Albouystown-B 5-2. Omallo Williams bagged a double in the second and 17th minute, while Okeene Fraser netted twice in the 22nd and 24th minute. Chipping in with a fourth minute effort was Tyrese Forde. For the loser, Andrew Webber and Carl Tudor, scored in the first and ninth minute, respectively.
The quarter-finals are scheduled for tonight at the same venue.
