The Winter Olympics in South Korea will be remembered for the joint Women’s Ice Hockey team comprising host country South Korea together with North Korea, and although it failed to medal, it turned out to be a win-win outcome for the two arch enemies.
This is a significant development which even though symbolic could potentially help to build bridges between the North and the South. The Cold War has long ended and several countries that were once divided in the aftermath of the Second World War have now been reunited. Among these were North and South Vietnam and East and West Germany. The Berlin Wall which at one time served as a physical barrier to the German people was brought down in 1989.
The time is long overdue for the two Koreas to unite and by so doing bring families and friends who were torn apart once again together.
The participation of the two Koreas in the Winter Olympics could also serve to thaw relations between the two countries and hopefully reduce tensions between North Korea and the United States which has recently reached dangerous proportions.
There is an urgent need for new and enlightened thinking by the relevant powers in the search for a permanent and just resolution to the decades-old problem that has divided the Korean people for such a long time.
