The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) will know which direction it is heading today as the Court ordered election of office bearers of the body is expected to take place at the New Amsterdam Town Hall from 11am.
It is unclear who are the persons contesting the post of BCB president as, up to press time yesterday, only Dhieranidranauth Somwaru had confirmed that he would be contesting the post of BCB president.
Somwaru claimed to have won the previous elections which was mired in controversy and which outcome was challenged in Court leading to the decision for fresh elections.
However, while a number of names have been touted as candidates for the post, some were playing their cards close to their chests. Vemen Walters and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club Hilbert Foster, are two persons whose names have been suggested as candidates for the post but according to information reaching Stabroek Sports, the candidates will be only be known today at the AGM. According to a Court ruling by Justice Navindra Singh, today’s AGM will be supervised by one of the court’s agents who will verify the presence of each representing club and sub association.
At the end of the verification process, the Returning Officer will be elected from among those present.
According to Somwaru, who has said that he will definitely be running for the post of president today, he “hopes this election is followed strictly by the rulings of Justice Singh and allows for a smooth and fair election.”
He added: “Whosoever takes the position and is elected fairly I hope they continue to take Berbice Cricket forward.”
The sub associations are West Berbice, Berbice River and Upper Corentyne while the first division clubs are Blairmont, Police, Mt. Sinai, Fort Canje, Guymine, Rose Hall Estate, Chesney, Albion, Port Mourant, Whim, and Kildonan. The sub associations are allowed four voting delegates while the clubs are allowed two voting delegates each
