Nyron Joseph and Michael Alphonso stormed to championship honours in the 2018 edition of the Bounty Farm Ltd., Handicap squash tournament at the Georgetown Club Squash courts on Camp Street yesterday.
Joseph, the Open category winner, put on a fine display by muscling the ball and made life difficult for Alexander Cheeks in the grand finale.
He found peculiar areas on the wall to take the first set 15-2, remarkably only dropping two points.
Cheeks struck back in the second, taking it 15 – -5 to make things interesting.
Joseph, however, rediscovered his groove in the third set and executed a number of well-placed shots. He continued to control the flow of the game, taking the third and the match 15-9.
Third place in that category went to Nicholas Narine (-12) who came from a set down to defeat an exhausted-looking Adams Alves (+5) 6-15, 15-11, 15-7.
Alphonso (-6), who played with excellent match awareness, outmanoeuvered Abosaide Cadogan with his perfectly placed tin shots to capture the category A final 15-6, 15-11.
Kirstin Gomes, in the third-place Category A match, eased her way past James Mekdedi 15-10, 15-11.
In the Open category Plate final, the experienced Robert Natiello saw off the up-and-coming Samuel Ince Cacelhel two sets to one, 15-14, 11-15, 15-9 while in the Category A Plate final, Nicholas Verwey had the better of Karim Khan (+2) two sets to one 15-9, 4-15, 15-9.
Category A Plate third place playoff saw Zakary Persaud making light work of Osmand Mack (+3) 15-6, 15-8.
