Regal Masters, Speedboat and Trophy stall Angels emerged champions of their respective categories in front of a packed Zeeburg Community Centre Ground, East Bank Essequibo Sunday in the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) Mike’s Pharmacy, Nauth Motor Spares and Trophy Stall softball tournament.
The finals of the tournament, postponed since last November because of rain, was played under blazing sunshine and the conditions seemed to sui danger man Mahase Chunilall who blasted a superb 52 with six sixes as Regal Masters stumbled to 105 all out in their 20 overs.
They lost Eon Abel and Troy Kippins without scoring and Mohendra Arjune and Eric Thomas for just three and one run respectively but Man-of-the- Match, Chunilall received support from Mahendra Hardyal with an unbeaten 18 and David Harper with 14 to post their eventual total.
The Wellman bowling was led by Lester Thom (2-5), Jagdesh Persaud (2-13) and Latchman Kallicharran (2-20).
Wellman started strongly with openers Vivekanand Dinesh (17) and Basil Persaud (10) but after they were dismissed, aggressive bowling by the
Regal unit saw wickets tumbling with little resistance.
Captain Wayne Jones scored a fighting 18 and Greg De Franca (14) but Wellman were bundled out for 93 with three balls remaining in the innings.
Harper, 3-24, Kippins, 2-9, Parsram Persaud, 2-18 and Laurie Singh, 2-20 were the wicket takers.
In the female final, Mike’s Wellwoman suffered an eight-wicket defeat to Trophy Stall Angels.
The five-overs-a-side contest saw Wellwoman scoring 41-3 with Matana Cambridge taking 2-12. In reply, Trophy Stall Angels reached the target in a mere 3.1 overs.
Ruth George top scored with with 18 while Cambridge blasted a quick-fire 14.
Cambridge was named Player-of-the-Match.
In the Open category, Speedboat, led by Man-of-the-Match Kishore Smith defeated Success by six wickets.
Batting first in the 15-overs-a-side affair, Success managed 92-9 with Speedboat giving away 26 runs in extras.
Smith picked up three crucial wickets and Mark Harold two.
Speedboat reached their target in 7.1 overs as Lennox Marks smashed four sixes on his way to 34. He was supported by Greg Smith with 25.
De Franca was the Most Valuable Player in the Masters segment while Rajesh Reddy of Farm was the Open MVP; June Ogle was the MVP in the female category.
