With the Republic flag-raising ceremony set to be hosted at the D’Urban Park facility again on Thursday, remedial works on the VIP section have started. When Stabroek News visited the facility yesterday, the entire floor of the VIP area was being replaced. The workers had already removed half of the plywood floor and were in the process of repairing it with new materials. Last year, in May, remedial works were also done on the facility, including the VIP section in preparation for the 51st anniversary celebrations. Director of National Events, Colonel Godfrey Bess had confirmed that the works featured a major overhaul of the floor of the VIP section. Despite the more than $1b spent on the facility, critics have said poor work and substandard material have created more expense.
