Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis smashed his way through an overmatched Nathan Ferrari via a first round TKO on Sunday night at the National Gymnasium in the headline bout of the Patrick Forde Memorial Open.
This was a rematch of the light welterweight final of the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament two months ago in Ferrari’s hometown of St Lucia. But Ferrari, who walked to the ring clutching a Bible, could not reverse his fortunes of another first round stoppage against the tall power puncher.
Fighting in all red, minus the red cape, ‘Superman’ came out throwing bombs and landed with laser-like precision as the crowd erupted following the first knockdown, compliments of flush right hand to the chin.
After regaining his bearings, a game Ferrari reengaged the ‘Superman’ landing a few telling blows of his own, but Lewis soon landed a flurry leaving the Ferrari on punctured tires prompting AIBA One Star certified referee, Lawrence Assanah to put an end to the headliner.
For his heroic hometown performance ‘Superman’ was awarded the Best Boxer elite and overall trophies. The best boxer overall trophy was presented to Lewis by Ferrari who displayed a tremendous sportsmanlike attitude. Deeron Williams (schoolboy best boxer), Ravin Rodrigues (junior best boxer), Chris Moore (youth best boxer) and Alisha Jackman (female best boxer) also took home trophies and one year’s bragging rights from the second annual fixture which was coordinated by McDonald Promotions and the Guyana Boxing Association.
Two of Guyana’s brightest prospects, Keevin Allicock and Desmond Amsterdam also improved their records on Sunday in exciting fashion. Allicock forced Jamal Eastman’s corner to throw in the towel in the second round while the referee put a halt to the carnage of Amsterdam’s opponent Kelvin Wielzen of Suriname. That bout also ended in the second round.
Local standouts, Chris Moore and Joel Williamson also ensured that Guyana sent back home the two other Surinamese, Toni Lin and Blond Pikienito with unanimous losses. The knockout night of boxing which had 14 bouts inclusive of an exhibition fight, was well attended and deemed a success. According to President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, the next local GBA event will be the National Novices. It will be staged sometime in April.
