A seven-member team will depart Guyana today to participate in the Central America and Caribbean Games Qualifying tournament and the
Latin American Table Tennis Championships in Havana, Cuba.
According to a release from the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA)
The players named are national men’s champion Christopher Franklin, Nigel Bryan, Shemar Britton, Joel Alleyne, Natalie Cummings, Jody Ann Blake and Trenace Lowe who will join the team from the United States of America.
Chelsea Edghill will miss the qualifiers because of final year studies.
The CAC Qualifiers end March 4th and the players will look to qualify for the 2018 CAC Games to be held July 19th- August 3rd in Barranquilla, Colombia in both singles and team play.
Upon the completion of the CAC Qualifiers, the Latin American Table Tennis Championships will be held from March 4th-9th.
Some 13 men and nine women’s teams from the CAC region will vie for qualification.
Britton will compete in team and singles events at the LATTU championships.
The GTTA stated that it also plans to participate at the Commonwealth Games, the South America Games and the Latin America TT championships.
“With our plans to have some of our key players attend a High Yield Training Camp in Germany leading into the CAC Games, we feel this will truly provide a great opportunity to have our players actively involved in high level competition and training which will provide continuity in our player’s competition and training regimen which will significantly improve our medal prospects for the CAC games and the senior Caribbean championships,” the release stated.
The GTTA added that it would like to “express appreciation and heartfelt thank you to the Guyana Olympic Association and Connections Travel Service for assisting the association’s efforts in getting the team to Cuba.”
