A fugitive of Baramita, North West District resident, was shot twice on Monday afternoon after he allegedly attacked the police while resisting arrest.
Ruben Baird, who is nursing two gunshot wounds to his right foot, is currently hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) under police guard. His condition is listed as stable.
The shooting occurred around 5 pm on Monday at Williams Area, Baramita, as the police were about to arrest Baird, who is wanted for several offences committed recently in his community.
According to a Guyana Police Force press release, investigations have revealed that Baird was approached by two police constables, who were both armed with service weapons.
He reportedly tried to chop one of the ranks and was shot once in his right foot by the other rank.
It is further alleged that after being shot, Baird, who had a raised cutlass, charged menacingly toward the rank who shot him and the rank instinctively discharged another round, which struck him again in the right foot, the release explained.
Baird was disarmed and rushed to the Baramita Health Centre, where he was treated before later being transferred to the city. He remained hospitalised up to yesterday afternoon.
