Niran Bissu captured the Scotiabank/Titans Table Tennis club boys under – 18 title in the biggest upset of the tournament when he remarkably defeated Miguel Wong in fading light Sunday evening at the Queen’s College Auditorium.
It was Bissu’s second title of the tournament after he had earlier won the boys under – 15 crown, his third title in that category for the third week running.
Wong however, who had been expected to take the under – 18 title, had moments before lost in the ‘B’ class final 2-3 (13-11, 8-11, 4-11, 11-6, 3-11) to Kyle Edghill and immediately after played the under – 18 final.
He seemed a tad bit jaded which Bissu capitalised on and won in straight sets 11-7, 11-9, and 11-6 with relative ease.
It was Edghill, the national junior champion and brother of Chelsea Edghill’s first competition after taking a break because of studies.
Jamal Nicholas won the third-place match, defeating Yeudistir Persaud 3-2 in a gruelling five-set encounter.
It was an evening marked with upsets as Thuraia Thomas defeated Neveah Clarkston 3 – 1 in the girls under – 18 final.
It was sweet revenge for Thomas who had earlier tasted defeat at the hands of Clarkston in the girls under – 15 round robin finals.
Thomas began the match strongly and took the first two sets 11-9, 11-6 before Clarkston served her back into contention with an 11-9 third set win.
Thomas nonetheless, remained calm and stuck to the task, duly preventing the match from going the distance by winning the fourth set 11-8.
Meanwhile, Bissu and Clarkston once again captured the boys and girls’ under – 15 titles after they both played unbeaten in the round robin final.
Bissu won all three of his round robin matches, defeating Kaysan Ninvalle 3-2 in an exciting game while in the matcher before, he slammed his way past Isaiah Layne 3-0 and Jonathan Van Lange by a similar score line.
Layne, however, earned the second posting by virtue of defeating both Ninvalle and Van Lange three sets to two.
Ninvalle came in third after gaining a consolation win over the winless Van Lange in straight sets.
Clarkston on the other hand, had a stroll when she took to the table, with wins over Thomas, Nkechi McRae and Shania Barrow all by 3-0 scores in her under-15 triumph. Thomas was second with two wins.
The organizers, Titans Table Tennis Club, at the end of the tournament, thanked Alfred Granger, Chairman of Queen’s College Board for granting permission for the matches to be held in the school’s auditorium.
