A Sisters, East Bank Berbice man is now in police custody after he reportedly chopped his mother with a cutlass while under the influence of alcohol.
Police said ranks of the Sister’s Police Station apprehended the 21-year-old suspect after chasing after him in the Berbice River, into which he plunged in a bid to escape.
Police said at about 11.30 am yesterday, Rajmatie Sookram was attacked by her son, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. During the attack, Sookram sustained chop wounds to her head and arm. The motive behind the attack is unclear.
The woman’s residence is located near the police station and ranks responded immediately after hearing the commotion.
According to the police, as Constables Austin and McKay were approaching the scene, the suspect saw them and ran towards the river and jumped in.
The ranks trailed behind him and as they swam towards him he is reported to have dropped the cutlass in the river. When the ranks caught up to him, scuffle ensued but the ranks were able to overpower and apprehend him.
The man is currently in police custody.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told that the man’s mother was discharged from the New Amsterdam Hospital, where she was taken for the treatment of her injuries.
