An 18-year-old conductor was yesterday remanded to prison on a robbery charge.
It is alleged that Amstel Bacchus on March 4th, at Camp Street and North Road, in the company of others robbed a woman of a handbag containing an umbrella, cash and a cellphone valued $33,000.
Bacchus pleaded guilty to the charge and stated that he was walking along North Road with his friends and two other boys were walking in front of them. He then said that the two boys were the ones who robbed the woman.
Magistrate Fabayo Azore, after hearing his explanation, entered a not guilty plea.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted and stated that Bacchus gave two different addresses to the court and to the investigating officers. He told the former that he resided at Duncan Street, and the latter that he lived on Independence Boulevard.
The magistrate subsequently denied bail and remanded Bacchus to prison. The matter will be called again today.
