Today at the Promenade Garden from 3pm women will be celebrated as the High Commission of Canada to Guyana in collaboration with the Government of Guyana host an International Women’s Day 2018 Expo & Concert at the Promenade Gardens.
According to a press release the concert will feature a keynote address from Guyana’s First Lady Sandra Granger and performance from Toronto based Canadian Guyanese jazz sensation Faith Amour. Locally songbird Lisa Punch will be leading the way with other performances include African drumming, Indian and Indigenous dance and live steel pan.
The free concert will also feature over 20 exhibition booths which will serve to educate, empower and create a network for local women’s groups and government service providers. This will also include international development programmes, Guyanese women and girls in science, advice for small business owners and entrepreneurs, health and wellbeing counseling, self-defense tips and food, drinks and fun for all the family.
The release stated that Canada is a long-standing advocate for gender equality and the promotion of arts and culture. Last year that country adopted a Feminist Inter-national Assistance Policy, which places gender equality at the heart of all its development efforts to build a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous would. The policy recognizes that promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls is the most effective approach to achieving this goal.
Further it was stated that Canada also believes in the power of culture and the arts to share ideas, start conversations, build ties, and deepen understanding among people and nations. Our artists are the best ambassadors for sharing our values and culture.
