PhotosPotable water for Chinoweng VillageBy Stabroek News March 11, 2018 Some 375 residents of Chinoweng Village, in Region Seven, are expected to have access to potable water for the first time by the end of May, when a new water system is expected to be completed. Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, the Managing Director of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Nigel Niles, Executive Director of Corporate Services at GWI, and Toshao Roger Roland, on behalf of the Chinoweng Village Council, signed the agreement in Bartica last Thursday. A GWI statement explained that under the agreement, the sum of $6 million will be spent by GWI for the procurement of materials for the construction of a catchment and a trestle for storage tanks, the installation of pipe network and stand pipes and the installation of a Photovoltaic system to provide water to residents, who currently have no level of service in the village. The statement noted that the sum of $5 million would be paid to the Chinowieng Village Council for the execution of those works, with the main focus being the supply of water to schools, health centres, teachers’ quarters and government buildings within the village. The works are expected to begin in April and to be completed by the end of May. The statement added that upon completion of the project, all the residents within the project area will receive potable water via stand pipes for a minimum of six hours. The village currently receives water from nearby creeks and via rain water harvesting and the statement said residents have to walk long distances during the dry season to access water.
