Each year on March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated the world over with thousands of events held by women’s networks which include global gatherings, conferences, award ceremonies, exhibitions, festivals, fun runs, corporate events, concert performances etc.
This year, the females of the Guyana Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) played their part in observance of the day by staging a powerlifting exhibition last week at Pollo Tropical on Robb and Camp Streets.
The two-hour event which started at 11:00hrs saw students, mothers, educators, lawyers, accountants and managers performing the various lifts and answering questions to curious onlookers about powerlifting.
General Secretary of the federation, Andrea Smith stated that the outreach was a means of breaking the stereotype of the public which saw intellectually and physically strong females promoting the positive ideals of the strength sport.
Smith noted that outreaches on or around IWD will be annual event for the male dominated discipline.
March 8 sees the annual IWD campaign theme kick off for the year ahead, although many groups around the world adopt and promote the campaign theme from early in the year. The IWD campaign theme provides a unified direction to guide and galvanize collective action.
This year’s campaign theme is #PressforProgress
The campaign theme does not end on International Women’s Day. It’s just the start. Throughout the year many groups worldwide adopt the IWD campaign theme for further campaign work, gender-focused initiatives, continuing activity and events.
